Need some help. Wife is not happy with the purchase because everytime i make a tri-tip it tastes like a hot dog. Had the same problem with a propane smoker. Could it be I'm not coating the meat with enough rub to keep out all the smoke?

What flavor pellets are you using? I don't believe rubs are supposed to keep smoke out! We normally want smoke.

Maybe it's your wife?

Sounds weird to me. Most complain therr is not enough smoke. Maybe try salt/pepper/garlic only as a rub (some store rubs are gross) and use Traeger pallets.

Sounds like you need to switch pellets and rubs!!
Try a mellow apple or cherry.
Oak and hickory are stronger.
Also what temperature are you cooking at the lower the temperature the more smoke. If she doesn't like smoke your going to have to cook at a higher temperature and use mild pellets.
A quality rub will go along way.
There are lots online and also great rub recipes.
Look at www.smokingmeat.com
