This is probably a really dumb question, but I am going to go there anyway. I have seen many videos where people are just putting their probes in the meat and letting the wire go between the door and the body. Is it better to use the grommet in the side of the body that was made for the probe wires to go through or is it ok to let them hang out the front? Seems like everyone is always trying to get their door to be "sealed" with LavaLock, but letting the wire prop the door open some seems to be counter-intuitive. I am probably over thinking this, but I was just wondering what your thoughts were on the subject? Do you use the grommet? Thanks.

I personally always use the grommet. I've used up to 4 probes at once so far. I also do have LavaLock on but I use the grommet because it's there and keeps the wires neat and out of the way.

Grommet

Gromott if you have one, I left a 1/4 - 1/2 inch gap in the felt and put the probe wires through that...

Grommet, I don't want to take a chance and kink the probe wires. On my offset I just drilled a small hole for the probe to just slip through.

i put that insulation tape around the perimeter of the lid, so i just let it come through the lid. it seals, and i'm not pulling the grommet out every time i take the probe out.

i'm a klutz, it happens, and then i'm trying to put the grommet back in a hot hole.

that sounded bad.

Grommet... Temperature probe manufacturers do not recommend bringing the wires out between the lid and the grill housing due to temperature concerns. I reckon many people have done this including myself, but I understand it can reduce the probe wire durability.

The rock lave felt is thick enough for making a gap and not putting any pressure on the probe cables.

I believe that manufacturers want to minimize wire contact with hot metal as opposed to the hot air inside grill.
Apparently, they believe that the metal gets hotter than the air in some areas and if the probe wire is in contact, it can fail prematurely.
Perhaps that is why Traeger provides the rubber grommet. It does not get hot during cooking...
I mean this is just an awareness thing... A new temp probe costs only $15...

I've never been able to get the grommet to stay in the damn hole. I just run the wire through the hole.

Timmy, tell him about the silicon

i used the grommet today and as i was pulling out one of the probes it started to bring the grommet out with it again. i think it's because the weber probe thickens at the 90 degree bend.

but i was being careful.

please. tell me about the silicon what now @Timmy? high temp somthing?
