Thinking about GrillGrates

I am happy with mine because they add some versatility to my Traeger. The marketing is exaggerated in that the temp doesn't get raised as much as they claim, but it does raise some at the surface. I'm able to get nice sear marks from the grill side and the flat side makes a nice impromptu griddle when that's called for. The fact that you can mix/match them (2 pieces with the grates up and 1 piece with the flat-side up) increases the versatility. The Grate Tool came with my purchase from local BBQ geek store and it works extremely well.

I do love my GrillGrates but their optional cleaning accys are pretty worthless I've found. I just use a loose Grill Grubber pad and a narrow toothbrush sized stainless brush to knock down the big stuff.

Unless the grill grates receive direct radiation from the firepot, they are not going to be any hotter than the chamber temperature. If you remove the drip tray and flame shield, then they will get hotter due to direct radiation.

The advantage of Grill Grates is that they are made of aluminum that conducts heat to the meat faster than just placing the meat on the normal steel grates. So they do help. . I was not that impressed with the results of my Grill Grates on my IW 885. I now sear steaks on either my gas griddle (with the Grill Grates places on the carbon steel stove) or in a carbon steel pan on the gas stove in the kitchen.

You can also purchase a flame thrower to sear your steaks either before or after smoking.

GrillGrates are a great addition to any smoker/grill. Depending on the smoker you have, GrillGrates will increase your smoker's max temperature by 150 to 200 degrees, depending on what smoker you have. I use them on my LoneStar Grillz Pellet Smoker, Pitts & Spitts Maverick Pellet Smoker, Timberline 1300 and Slow & Sear Charcoal grill. Great sear marks on meats and veggies. A worthwhile investment in my opinion.

If your GrillGrates are exposed to direct radiation from the firepot, then they can be hotter than the chamber temperature. If the flame shield and drip tray are in place, such direct radiation is blocked and the GrillGrates cannot exceed the chamber temperature. Doing so would violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics, which is an impossibility. Any claim of the GrillGrates elevating the temperature is pure fantasy.

The way GrillGrates work is that they are made of aluminum. They have a large area exposed to the convective heat of the cooking chamber. Because aluminum is highly conductive, it transfers the heat rapidly to the protein. Thus, the EFFECT is to provide heat to the protein faster than convection could alone. However, the actual temperature of the GrillGrates cannot exceed the chamber temperature unless you remove the flame shield and drip tray to expose the Grill Grates to direct radiation.

On gas grills and charcoal grills, the protein is exposed to direct radiation. In that situation, the GrillGrates can achieve elevated temperatures.
