Permanent Probe Location

Actually, I will put them next to the Traeger probes. Side by side, the way they are on my patio, the probes will be essentially next to each other making it easy to use them both at the same time.

yeah you have that luxury, my Traeger probe is coming out where the pellet storage is right behind it... I'll have to come up with some creative places for mine.

Back from another business trip to San Antonio (stopped at Buc-ee's in New Braunfels each way (y)) and my new ambient probes were waiting for me. I'm going to install them this weekend.

I noticed that they are threaded but have no back nut to secure them. Are they self tapping? What size bit did y'all use for drilling the hole? Thanks!

Which ones did you buy??? from FireBoard???
They had the 1/4 that you CAN buy a nut for... the 1/2 is NPT, I have a 1/2 NPT tap and drill I can send ya if that's what you wanna do???
I'd say if your wall is thick enough you should just be able to tap it and screw your probe right into it till it's tight

I bought the FireBoard one. Here's what they sent. No nut.

If it's NPT threads, they are tapered, so like Slim says, just screw it in till it's tight. By the pic, it looks almost like a non tapered thread. Go to a hardware store and verify, either get a nut or just drill and tap the hole and screw it in till it stops. No load on it so it doesn't matter much.

Turns out FireBoard sells these separately from the probe. It's in the fine print at the bottom of the probe description. How pathetic to not include it in the first place.

Seems shady to sell a bulkhead fitting and not supply the nut with it. Cost of that nut would be pennies even in SS.

I said that!! I tried to tell you in my last post

They sell 2 different ones and I was trying to find out which one you bought...

Glad you found them, now I know what you bought... 😁

That one you bought is a 1/4 BSP

I sent FireBoard an email about how disappointed I was about the hex nuts and recommended that they make it very clear that they are NOT INCLUDED. They offered to ship a set if I ordered one and refund the shipping cost. That works, but still I recommended they make it VERY OBVIOUS that they are not included on their web site. Sheesh.

Seeing as one would almost NEVER use the British Standard Pipe thread in any other everyday use, and probably never own that TAP, I'd have to agree that the nuts would be included... for example, my DIAL Therms I get for my old smokers come with 2 nuts and even a different thread if you have a different smoker!!!!

My Fireboard Ambient Probe 1 is mounted on a piece of stainless Plumbers tape about 1 inch from the Traeger Grill temp probe on the right. My Fireboard Ambient Probe 2 is mounted in the same location on the left. This gives me my Temperature gradient across the grill.
