Hey I’m new to the Traegar family and just purchased my first pellet smoker just before Christmas: Timberline 1300

I have been smoking for 3 years on a medium Big Green Egg which I kept but found the size limiting for bigger meats. I have 4 adult children and they often brings their girlfriends so the medium size was limiting.

I thought I would try a pellet smoker and got the 1300 so I could pretty much smoke anything. I recently bought a 24.5 Snake River Farm bone-in pork shoulder I’m going to try next weekend.

So far I’ve cooked tomahawk steak, brisket, duck, chicken, mac & cheese and a variety of different vegetables along with some queso cheese. Overall I’ve been happy with the convenience of the Traeger but I would say it is nowhere near the smokiness of the big green egg. i’ve also experimented with a variety of different pellets trying to find those that produce more smoke but so far I would say the differences between the pellets is relatively not noticeable.

So in conclusion, I am pretty happy with the purchase given the convenience of the pellet smoker but we should have a more smoky taste on the food. And yes, I’m using super smoke mode.

Never used one before. Any you highly recommend?

Thanks John S

I just ordered one from Amazon. I’m going to try it next weekend. I assume you just use the same pellets inside the tube the pellet smoker Is using—is that correct?

yes, or different ones if you want a mixed smoke flavor profile.
just load it up tight and light it off with a propane torch then set it in the grill. Now you get double smoke....

I'm new to this pellet grill thing too...but not too long ago watched a YouTube video where the presenter did a 50/50 mix of charcoal pellets and competition pellets, the brand he used was Pit Boss. I've got 5 gallon buckets of pre-mix that I sifted out so it's ready to go! Did my Pro 575 burn-in with this mix and it went pretty well. Haven't grilled anything yet as I am waiting for some fireblack seal for the lid and the thermal blanket to go over it. I also ordered a 6-pack of firebrick to go in the bottom of the grill to assist with heat retention and radiation. I'm kinda shooting for the "pizza grill" angle, if ya know what I mean!!!😁👍🏻
