Connect to Wifire from different network

This is a question about how the wifire works. I am assuming that I need to be on the same network as my grill in order to connect to it via the app. If that is the case, I was wondering if I setup a vpn into my home router would I be able to connect to the grill via the app if I was away from my house or on a different network? I am thinking for a long smoke I can be out and periodically check the status without actually being home. I'm just curious if anyone has tried it and was successful.

The connectivity actually goes through the cloud, so as long as your grill is connected to your WiFi at home, you can monitor it from anywhere your phone has Internet connectivity.
