I'm pretty good about keeping the pit clean. Usually vacuuming it and wiping it down inside (including the sensor) before almost all cooks. Why does the display always give me a cleaning notice? I always vacuum out the cup as part of this ritual. Any suggestions?

Never mind - I'm an idiot. I thought there was actually a sensor for this.

Hahah. Yep no sensor. I don’t pay any attention to it, never reset it or anything. I vac my grill before each use, just a habit I got into when I got the grill.

Hey don’t beat yourself up, it’s been driving me crazy too. I almost disassembled my 780 trying to figure out what I was missing when I was cleaning it. I then just started cleaning before each use and said the hell with it, it was letting me ignite it and was cooking so I was happy. Thanks for putting this information out!

I generally clean my grill after a few hours of operation. If I am doing short cooks, I might go for several cooks before cleaning the grill. If I am going to do a long cook such as a pork butt, I will clean the grill before the cook.

If you like using apple wood pellets, be aware that they tend to have quite a bit of silica and there will be some slag buildup in the fire pot. That makes the need for cleaning more important.
