Hello Traeger family,
Well I think I have a problem. To begin with I have a Ironwood 885 and love it,soooo I was thinking about getting a smaller Traeger to use at our camper. Well I was on facebook market place and there was a Traeger Scout for sale for a reasonable price so thinking why not right? It’s a Treager. Well I made the purchase got it home. It was still in the box and the guy told me he opened the box did the burn in and never got around to doing a cook because of his work. Guy seemed to be pretty square shooter. I looked at it and thought NICE like new. So after opening it up at home I noticed it was missing the meat probe and the grease bucket. Got on line chatted with treager ordered what I needed and its on its way. SOO after that I found this site and did some looking around and it seems Huston I have a problem. The Treager rep wanted the serial number which I found out the Scout was manufactured in 2009. I’m thinking WHAT?.. Hell it looks new . It had never been registered so he said thats not a problem…OK I know I'm windy, but wanted to tell the story not leaving out the details as to why Im here. It seems that the Scout is no longer made and has been replaced with the Ranger? And that the Scout was recalled in 2018? FIre hazard and also many complaints about temperature swings. Well did I buy a lame horse? Is there something I can do to make this thing work right or am I having a melt down for nothing?..Thanks in advance.

Hard to say for sure without seeing it but I wouldn’t worry about it. They are still making the scout I believe but only for Costco. I could be wrong. The ranger is a step up from the scout as it has bigger hopper and higher lid And I believe a nicer controller. They were both available concurrently. I cannot remember what issue there was with the scout that prompted any recalls but often times those things are very minor. Just watch grease buildup in the tray. Those little Traeger’s are awesome for searing and weeknight meals. Get some grill grates for it. The fire pot is right below the pan. I’ve never personally heard of any people in my area having any issues with either the ranger or scout as far as safety or performance. Only thing I’ve heard about is trouble with the meat probe. I’d buy an aftermarket one if needed the one with those grills is not good even when working properly. Just not convenient having to push button on controller and quick read the temp in 5 seconds.

hopefully it works out. Might call Traeger and see if there are upgraded parts for the thing to bring it in compliance with the recall issue. I bet if there are and they have them they’d send them. At very least you’d get an explanation of the potential issue. Good luck. 👍🏼
