Thermopen open box special

Legitimate question here... why are these thermometers around $100 or more new, while other probe thermometers sell for between $10 and $50. I'm not opposed to spending more on quality or whatever, but just curious about what the selling point is. Are the cheaper ones supposed to be less accurate? I'll admit I bought a cheaper one a few years ago and I am beginning to question how accurate it is.

I tired the cheap way... I went ThermoPRO instant read, somewhere around $40
Unboxed it and it was reading inside my house at 99°, no matter what i did or tried it was acting broken
they didn't even want it back, they sent me a NEW ONE, it wasn't much different. I never use them.
bought the Mk4 and now the fireboard Spark and both well worth it. That's just my testimony.

You eating UNCOOKED food is at stake here.... so like it or not, you're not gonna get reliability at $10-$50, as I said, I tried

That's not to say you won't get lucky, I hope you do, but I need something quality and proven.

You can't go wong, Wong...

I have a cheap one from Amazon (I think it’s a Javelin) and it seems to work ok, but…

I also have a MK4 and this is my go-to. I trust the readings, the build quality is way better, the reading faster, and if I ever need to speak to customer service it’s a U.S. number instead of an email address to China.

I am also a home brewer (although it’s been a long time!) and accurate temperatures are important in this hobby too so I use several Thermoworks, including my MK4.

I'm gonna plug the new FireBoard Spark here also... YES, probably too expensive for most here, but this thing Rocks, and it's the 'MK4' on steroids (at least digital steroids)
