so this is the fourth cook I have done with my new scout. I decided to smoke some ribs at 225 for several hours. Unfortunately, Traeger decided that wasn't going to be an option. Set at 225 the grill goes from 180-400 at the drop of a hat. I even set it at 180 and its currently cooking at 244. If it cannot hold a set temp why put the temp on the grill. Well this is a bust guess I will take it back and Get a green egg or something.

They do have an issue with catching on fire. I returned mine to Costco

I got this instead. Great deal for $299

after a lot of research it appears the best way to fix the issue is to return it for a Ranger or a different manufacturer.

I purchased a Scout on 2/1/21, am having the same difficulty with temp swings. I see the recall is from 2018, is there still a fire hazard issue with them? Thanks

You may have better luck with the Ranger which is what I have. On my unit the meat probe is useless (which is a common complaint with other models which is why you should buy a good instant read and an alternate meat probe) but the ambient probe is ok (and just ok). You definitely need to keep these small grills closed as much as possible. I also recommend that you creep up on the temperature you want to grill at. In other words, if you want to grill at, say, 300F then don't start the unit and immediately set it to 300. Let it warm up to it's minimum temp (165F I think) and then set an intermediate temperature before setting it to 300F. Don't expect it to hold closely to that temperature though if you are opening the grill or if there is a chilling wind directed toward the vents. Even if you are keeping it closed and it isn't windy you will still see swings of, say, 20 degrees from time to time. If you are smoking (i.e. have a longer grill time) these swings won't matter much. Hope this helps.

I bought a scout and it did the same thing. After much frustration I ended up replacing the controller with the ranger arc controller, Zero problems now! My next upgrade is the bigger ranger hopper extension. So basically I have an overpriced ranger but at least it works great now.

Have you replaced the hopper? Goofed and got a scout. Looking at mods to enlarge hopper and potentially raise the over lid height.

Take it back to Costco and then find a retailer and pay up for the Ranger. It’s a beast! Sometimes the cheap stuff is just that.

I just purchased a Scout. I just can't believe it is a Traeger! My tailgater does great, right on. This thing is an embarrassment to Traeger. I found the suggestion of changing the pause time... didn't work. I attached files. I contacted Traeger and waiting to hear from them. I can't take it back since I cooked on it from what I found. 492 on 225 temperature setting!!! And the probe temp goes up and down, total mess.

Costco says it is a manufacturer problem, take it up with Traeger

Deal with Traeger tech suppoert. They will send you a new controler. Install it and it probably wont work either. Tech support again. They will have you do a video call to monitor and verify the startup temps and high temp etc Be prepared to spend some time with them. Assuming it is still not good they will probably send you a new Ranger as a replacement. At least, thats what happened with me. I did bought the Scout at Costco also

Scouts are sold exclusively at Costco these days.
