Last weekend I went to buy a Ironwood and came home with the 850.:ROFLMAO: I didn't do the research on the 850 before and found out I bought the 2018 model. I wonder if it will be possible to update the 18 to the new D2 controller, fan and auger? So far I'm in love with it but I'm bothered by the fact If I would have waited a month I could have had a 19 model.

Congratulations!

I returned a 2019 Pro 575 with the D2 controller, I had so many problems, Im about to pick up a Timberline 850, that old controller has been tested and it has great reviews. i would not change it. Many people having problems with the new D2 controllers.

That is great to know! Maybe in a year or 2 they will have all the "bugs" fixed and then maybe look back into it. Thanks Uncle George!

Timberline is a great smoker. A friend has one and once they got the bugs out it has been rock solid. Just too much cash for me up here in Canader for the ironwood is a good fit

That makes me feel alot better about not having the new bells and whistles. I replaced a pro22 with this Timberline and wasn't expecting a huge difference in my cook's but boy was I underestimating this unit. It's incredible and the super smoke has been impressive as well. This thing really puts in the smoke. I have noticed that even when there is minimal smoke coming out the downdraft that it has alot of smoke in the pit when I sneak a peak. It keeps smoke in the pit way longer. And also when I HAVE to have it open for a minute or 2, the temp drop is not significant like my pro22 was that took an eternity it seemed to get back to temp. When I bout this last weekend. I actually bought my first bag of traeger pellets. I have been using lumberjack for a couple years. And lastly, my background for 18 years or so before I went to pellets, I learned to cook on a indirect Klose Cooker with mentoring and wisdom of a local BBQ pro that competition cooked for years. I was very fortunate to have him. After a few years and raising kids my passion faded a bit because of all the baybysiting and work that it took. These days (older) I love the pellets for obvious reasons and it has renewed my passion because of the simplicity and also believe they produce just as good a product as the traditional pits if you know how to prep, have quality meat, good rub/ injection etc. So happy I got my first pellet a couple years back! Already thinking I should have gotten the 1300! ?Thanks guys!

So I received my new T850 yesterday. 1st try... last night Challenge Chicken.. perfect. Today I decided on ribs. During preheat everything seems fine, then once in cook cycle the convection fan cycles on/off every 2 sec.. Called Traeger support, they had me go through a process of removing the control panel, removing the grill under the hopper, cutting the tie wraps and pulling the fan wire out the front, disconnecting the orange wire (fan wires), counting 30 and reconnecting. Supposed resetting of the fan. Made not sense. Did nothing to fix the on/off cycle issue. Called Traeger a second one time, now they recommend replacing the fan (not the control unit). Problem.. I won't have fan until June. Sounds like their is a QC issue with the fans, they're installing g at the factory. Probably a silent replacement of defective manufacturing. Seriously disappointed. $1700 and the third g craps out after one use.

Anyone experience same with the T850?

Only in super smoke should the fan cycle every 2-3 seconds at temps 165-225. It may be stuck in super smoke mode?

Thanks. Think I'm going to return this unit. Didn't plan on getting the 2018 model. I saved to get the 2019. No indication via Ace Hardware Online ordering that they were shipping the old stuff. There's so many improvements with the 2019.

I got the 18 model only to find out 19 was about to be released. Was kind disappointed until this thread. The guys are saying that there are problems with the D2 controllers so I'm good for now and maybe upgrade after they work out the kinks. Good luck on the 19 I'm curious on how it's gonna run coming "out of the gate". Check back in!

I am 4 cooks in and a couple of test dry runs with the d2 controller. The 225 setpoint is a bit off at this point but once u set it at 250 to about 450 it keeps temp fairly accurately. There will be a fireware release to address the lower actual temp at 225. As with any new product there can be some minor bugs to work out in the beginning. The 225 issues is only a fireware upgrade away. I'm happy with mine regardless and it will be resolved.

Thats normal. Most PID controlled smokers do that. All Rec Tec and GMG smokers do that. You want that to happen, more smoke flavor and better temp control, i had a rec tec and when I heard the fan doing that on this grill I was so happy. On and Off cycles are great. And they will happen with or without super smoke under 225, but more consistent with super smoke.

Run the grill at 350+ and that should not happen, unless its trying to hold temps. What temps were you running?

I dont want to see that D2 controller for about 6 month to a year until all problems are fixed. Had a really bad experience with it and Traeger does not want to acknowledge that there is a problem. im not paying them to test their grill. I stick with my new 850 Gen 1 that now all the bugs and issues have been fixed after 1.5 years, Maybe next year I upgrade to the D2 controller.
