I wanted a front shelf for my Silverton XL, but Traeger doesn't offer one for this model.
While shopping at Fleet Farm, I found a Traeger front shelf for the Pro 780 / Ironwood 885 on clearance for about $20, so I decided to see if I could make it fit.
What I changed
- Modified the factory mounting hooks with an angle grinder so they fit over the Silverton XL's stainless front rail.
- Smoothed and repainted the cut edges.
- The shelf now hangs securely from the front rail and can be removed in seconds.
- No holes were drilled in the Traeger.
Load Test
I tested it with a 20 lb bag of Traeger pellets sitting on the shelf. It remained very solid with virtually no flex, so I'm confident it'll handle trays, thermometers, foil, seasonings, and a wrapped brisket without any issues.Cost
- Traeger Pro 780 / Ironwood 885 front shelf (clearance): ~$20

- A little time with an angle grinder
- A few bolts and washers (included with the shelf)
- No modifications to the grill itself
I've included photos of:
- The original mounting "brackets"

- The modified brackets

- The installed shelf

- The underside support brackets

- The 20 lb load test

If anyone wants measurements or close-up photos of the bracket modifications, I'd be happy to post them.
