Hey Folks- I am going to take plunge in getting my first Traeger but wanted to pick your brains on some questions.

So I can't have this in my apartment building, so going to keep it at my pops place for the time being (lives 4 minutes away). So...
  • I enjoy cooking/grilling but have never have used a smoker before (never made ribs, brisket, etc). Is the Traeger Pro 780 the right move?
  • Might want to travel with it for weekends away and tailgates. If I take off the legs, would it fit in a typical car trunk (have a civic)?
  • Anything else I should think about or consider getting as well.
Thank y'all.

I am a novice here and got my Traeger over a month ago. I got the Pro 575, the smaller version of what you are considering. It is a great smoker.

But it is not a portable one. My Pro 575 is too heavy to move around and your Pro 780 will be even bigger and heavier. For tailgating you may want to consider Trager's portable line of grills, particularly the Traeger Ranger which may fit in your Civic.

A 780 is not meant to be portable and you never wanna cook on it without legs. It's 155lbs

Here's everything you need to know about your idea of a civic trunk

The 780 is huge. Look at the tailgater, it is smaller and the legs fold.

You will not be able to travel this grill easily. If you take the legs off it will not stand up on its own. You would need to make a cradle or some other means to keep it from rolling. I agree with the other reply that it is far too heavy as well. Yes you’re primarily thinking do you want a tailgate unit, I would go with a designed for that such as the Ranger or the Scout.

Here is a pic of my 780 and my Bronson 20. The Bronson is the same size as the tailgater, the tailgater has folding legs.
