Can I use my meat probe thermometer to check grill temp?

I have a redi chek remote thermometer which has 2 meat probes. Can I just use one of the probes and lay on grill to check the grill temp against what the traeger ambient probe says? Don't know if you need a special type of probe to act as an ambient temp probe. I do use a thermopen to as the final arbiter for correct internal temp, but the redi chek is pretty accurate.
 
I have a ThermoPro TP-25 (I know some scoff at that ;)), but I do that regularly. Not that it matters, but in their app, I just choose one to be ambient and set the low/high alarm range. I find it quite helpful.

Either put it thru a holder or cut a whole thru a chuck of wood and put it thru that... don't "lay" it on your grill
 
Most air/ambient temp probes are thicker, not tapered at all, and use grate/grill clips ... versus probes you put directly into your proteins ...
