Another thing I have tried is using a leaf blower to blow out the dust from the grill between periodic cleanings. This will get rid of ash that might settle on your food.

From my days long ago in Boy Scouts, I remember that no cook over an open fire was considered a success unless the food landed on the coals sometime during the cook. Ash is simply another form of seasoning. It imparts flavor to your food.
