Traeger Flatrock
Hey all,
New to the group and just grabbed a Traeger Flatrock floor model from Home Depot for a killer price. It’s basically brand new, but the flat‑top has a pretty even layer of surface rust from sitting assembled outside.

No pitting, just that uniform orange haze.

What’s the best way to bring the steel back to clean, bare metal before I season it? And anything I should avoid doing?

Appreciate any tips from folks who’ve dealt with this. Excited to get this thing going.

Traegar also makes its own version of a grill cleaner, which works great! Another option is to heat up the grill and steam clean it with a little white vinegar and water.

You can get an electric sander and sand the surface. Do not attempt to get it too smooth as you need some surface texture to anchor the "seasoning". After cleaning/sanding, be sure to put on multiple layers of seasoning. Five or six might be good. Make sure you apply a thin layer each time and then allow it to cure/polymerize. If you apply a thick layer, it is likely to flake off.

As for the "best" oil for seasoning, you will need to do your own research. There are lots of different opinions. Some say grapeseed oil is the best. I use peanut oil.
