Well just got off the phone again with Traeger CS about grill actual temp being off 30*+ low at 300 set temp. Initially they told me 15*+ or - was allowable now they are telling me that 25* +or - is allowable on my unit and not all models are the same. So now i dont know what to believe. I dont feel it is right to have to have a 2nd or 3rd temp monitor to see it there product is working properly. Its been 4 months dealing with them and waitng on parts that shouldn't have had to been replaced in the first place. Am i just being to picky or what? Thoughts?

If the grill holds a set temp fairly well, you could take one afternoon and use another thermometer to map the temp difference at different temp settings.

Once you do that, you could use this "map" to set the grill for future cooks. So if a brisket needs 190F smoke, maybe your grill needs to be set to 175F to hold a true 190F.

This appears to be something we need to do as Traegers seem to be less precise than one would expect.

Is it just always 30 deg low or does it swing up and down?
After it settled from temp increase or decrease. Temp runs 30* low consistently. Ran 30* low for 4 hrs last cook, grill set at 300*.

I see what you are saying. On my grill 175f would be 145f. So i dont know if it would get to 500f, but i dont know if i care. Most of my cooks are low n slow.

Interesting mine is 30F the other way, if you want 180 set for 210, 225 set for 260.
the Treager map is unfortunately a necessary document...
calibrated against a FireBoard....

The key to making a good map is to test many temp settings. My 850 runs +20 at lower temps but is about equal at 450F so it's not a linear relationship, at least on mine.

Mine is the same way. I set Traeger to 300f to obtain 270f actual temp. What model Traeger do you have?

My 780 went nuts 2nd and 3rd time i used it, temp went wild going over 350f 1st time and over 400f 2nd time. I shut it down both times. I called Traeger they sent me a new rtd. After install no change. Called Traeger again they sent a new controller. After new controller install i had no wild temp swings ran pretty stable. Since then i havent had it over 300f. At 180f set temp grill runs at that temp. When i go to 300f set temp grill runs 30ish degrees colder. So i bought a Fireboard2 i am going to "map" temp and use the Fireboard for actual temps and use the set temp on the Traeger to adjust heat to where i want it. So in my mind no it is not fixed. Ive called Traeger 9 times since June 12th 2020. Over 6 hrs on the phone and 1 video call. Im getting tired of trying to deal with them. Bottom line, im going to use the Fireboard to monitor grill and food temps. And live with the grill being off on actual temps. Im not going to use Traegers food probe either. On the Pro 780 Traeger says 25f either way of set temp is ok. Mine is at that or just over. I dont plan on going over 400f at all so im not worried about searing option. I hope this makes sense.

Well $340 later I'm equipped to use my Traeger. Fireboard 2 and a Thermopen MK4. Now i need to take an afternoon and map the Traeger. Then repair my offset smoker. Nice part is the thermometers can be used in different cooking units. I kind wish I'd have just purchased a nice offset, but i wouldn't have found this forum. Its cool seeing what everyone else is cooking and learning new things. I really like my Traeger now that i have it semi figured out. Hopefully it preforms good this winter and I'll have things to post.

Well just for kicks cranked temp up to 450f.
Fireboard temps were at 400f. I kinda figured this would be the case.
