ironwood 650
Is Super Smoke Mode worth the additional cost - I am looking purchasing the Ironwood 650 or the Pro 575

I like the ease of use on SuperSmoke, but as others have said elsewhere, you can buy a smoke tube (or 2) for a lot less.

I can't speak with respect to the comparison between the grill and how much effect the super smoke will get as oppose to none. But what I will say is that Ironwood is better insulated. There is no smoke stack as well. I have an IW 885 and I truly enjoy. I usually like to smoke at 185 with super smoke with low smoke. The smoke favor works for us. I also use the smoke tube for different type of wood favor.

I have it on my Ironwood 650 and cannot tell the difference. IMO not worth it. But the features of the Ironwood are worth it. At least the barrel is double walled, and you can put 20 lbs of pellets in the hopper. You can put another full size rack on the top also. It's a hack, but it's awesome and expands your cook surface quite a bit.

Not all Ironwood's are exactly the same width, so one of the brilliant folks on this forum came up with this mod to expand the support...

That may be more info than you want, but I don't regret spending the extra coin to get the extras.

Cheers!

That looks good. I need to do that mod this summer. Do you have the link to the thread or your steps including which rack to other?

I have an Ironwood 650, and honestly, there is no difference when using super smoke or not, not sure what the engineering dept was thinking that was all about. But a pair of smoke tubes is the way to go !

I really really like my Pro 780. If I ever get another. It will soley be all about biggest sq inches.

I think the super smoke does work well but the tubes are cheaper. I’d buy the Ironwood 885 if I were you.

I think the Ironwood and Timberline cook more evenly due to the exhaust. Smoke circulates and exits the rear whereas smokers that have a chimney on one side have a hot side because smoke starts in the fire pot in the center and smoke goes either left or right to escape leaving the opposite end a bit colder. More like a stick burner….

Super smoke - I can't ever tell if it makes a difference. Don't like the limitations on the temperature when SS can be used. I seem to always be using my two smoke tubes anyways.

To me, it boils down to interior space and the Ironwood is an oval tube with more interior height vs. the 575 which is a round tube.

I can do more jerky with that extra room and there's the room for the large drip pan when I smoke briskets or pork butts which does double duty of keeping moisture in the pit while later catching all the rendering fat.

I like the SS, though as others have suggested, it's hard to tell how much of a difference it makes. I use 1-2 smoke tubes in addition to SS, and certainly when above 225 where SS isn't available anyway. The better the insulation, the more consistent temps will be as well.

I would suggest buying the highest level model that you can comfortably afford. The keep warm function is also nice as is the double walled sides and pill shaped cook chamber with rear exhaust. if you can comfortably afford the IW, then I would not hesitate to purchase it.
