I asked this question on the Traeger contact page, but never got a response.

The bottom of the hopper has no cover on it. I know there has to be a source of air for the fans, but why isn't there a slotted panel to keep critters from getting to the wiring?

You ask a fair question. I'm not smart enough to offer an answer but I've looked there myself and pondered "why not at least a slotted panel?"

I finally got a response from Treger about this:

"Thank you for contacting Traeger, my name is Aurelio. The buttom part was designed for better ventilation and for the internal wires they have insulators that can withstand mite bites as well as heat corrosions as well. Thanks and HAPPY HOLIDAYS from TRAEGER TEAM."

Apparently, English is a second language for the responder. :)

Here’s the bottom of my ironwood 885, seems they cover some models on the bottom and not others.
