I guess these come out every year? Not sure, I’m a newbie. Anywho….my wife’s cousin owns a small hardware store in a neighboring town and they sale Traegers. He called and said he was going to get me this for our thanksgiving bird cook. I’m gonna use it of course because well….he offered….but I’m skeptical of Traeger pellets. Anyone have experience with these?

I used one last year with know issues. The second time I just bought the brine mixture and used Bear mountain pellets.

I am beginning to think that the most important measure of pellet quality is the age of the pellet. There is a lot of variation even in the same brand and age is the most likely reason for it. I have decided that in the future I will only buy them as needed and check the manufactured date if it is provided. If the turkey blend is this year's edition it may be fine.

Bumping this thread since I'll be smoking a turkey for Thanksgiving this year. My plan is to spatchcock & brine it.

Any tips for brine recipes, recommended pellets and cook temperatures (along with anticipated cook times) are welcome.

Thanks,
-PH

I have that kit, I will be using it this coming thanksgiving

I used this 2 years ago and it was great. Pellets burned well and the rub was solid.

Here’s some screenshots of an earlier post of mine I saved for future reference. This was a big boy around 20 or so pounds. The second one was a little smaller and cooked a little faster, but not drastically so. This was last year.

There is nothing wrong with the Traeger turkey kit. However, is it really necessary to pay more for the kit than you do for the turkey you are cooking??? You can easily make your own brine from some water, salt, brown sugar, and your favorite poultry spices.

As for pellets, you can use your favorites, but things like pecan, cherry, and apple work well with poultry.
