i live in ohio, and was wondering which one would be better to use in the cold. would i need a insulation blanket for the ironwood 650 or the timberline 850. I know that the 650 has double insulated sided walls, but the 850 has walls and hood insulation. and help is appreciated.

Frankly, the double walls help but they aren't really sealed in any way. I have an 850, and having double walls helps in cold and hot weather I'd say.

I'd go with the most you can afford, the 850's hood is very substantial and well sealed with its fabric gasket.

I went further and added ceramic wool insulation between all of the walls/hood to get higher efficiency and more stable operation in sun and cold wind etc.

But a blanket in a cold winter would do you just fine with any model.

thank you for the reply, I was planning on getting the 850. wasn't sure if it was just over kill. As for the ceramic wool insulation did you use the 1" or 2". found a 1"x24"x60"should that be enough?

All I can say is that the 850 is really solidly built. It weighs a ton so care is needed in transporting it to you. Some have received theirs with bent sides from the box being dropped on an end somewhere in the delivery.

Here's my thread on the insulation, 1/2" thick is what will fit between the panels. I bought smaller wool pieces, one for each side, rear, hood, etc;

You’d have to find a custom insulation blanket for those models. The Traeger blanket does fit the IW650 but it blocks the exhaust.
