After seeing some scorched grills around here I came across a good video from the Mad BBQ Scientist that I had to share. This brought back memories from Junior High metal shop class. We made little tack hammers and then "Blued" them like a gun barrel by heating them red hot and quenching them in oil.

This process imparts a nice rust proof black finish, so, translating this to the BBQ, spray the hot spots on the grill with cooking oil, wipe to a thin film before each cook and those areas will stay nice and black, and not rust.

I re-worked my grill with insulation so I cured the worst heat areas but the rear sheet metal at the top of my down draft exhaust box, where it folds inward, discolors in the corners from the heat. I have been oiling them, a couple of times now, and the areas are all black again, pretty cool.

Check it out, and report back if it works for you!
