Meteors themselves are fairly common. However, as many people live in or near big cities, the artificial lighting often obscures the light given off as it burns traveling through the atmosphere.

Since Lowell Indiana is often considered part of the greater Chicago Metro area, you were fortunate to see it and even more so to capture a photo.
