So I have a 1300...had it for a few weeks gotta love how I’m getting some paint wear on this one as well

Unfortunately that is a design flaw, that is the hottest spot on the Timberlines as that is where the internal exhaust ports vent into the back box. Only adding insulation inside will lower the temp in those two spots. All you can do now is to clean and touch up with high temp paint to prevent more rust.
 
Is there a way to add a "heat shield" or deflector in front of that area to cool it down?
 
Yeah...very frustrating. I'll check your insulation thread.
 
It's not too bad, some thin 26ga stainless, cut with tin snips and slip into the exhaust ports with some ceramic wool insulation sandwiched in-between.

Just insulating the vents and maybe the bottom is all you need to cure these heat damage issues.
